Why We Love Cottage Style!

Why Do We Love Cottage Style? And Especially Carmel Cottage Style?

What do we think of when we think of Carmel cottages?

  • Sometimes we think of images of tiny cozy sun drenched houses near the sea, close to the sounds of lapping waves, sighing winds, and gulls perched on pier posts...

  • Or we picture charming country houses surrounded by climbing heirloom roses, time-worn rock walls, graceful willow trees, and white picket fences over which the neighbors stop to chat...

  • And sometimes we picture a more rustic cottage, with vintage furniture made of willow branches, or overstuffed sofas draped in earth-toned materials set off here and there by brighter, more vibrant colors.

No matter how we picture our perfect Carmel cottage, the word "cottage" itself reminds us of something cozy, familiar, comfortable and casual, yet appealing to just about everyone we welcome into our homes. And if you've been to Carmel-by-the-Sea in California, you will see cottages of every type - most of them tiny, sweet, and welcoming!

Drawing from nature for its inspiration, cottage style focuses on colors that vary from buttery yellows to blues, pinks, lilacs, mauves and soft greens, all colors found in nature's palette. Garden elements can be incorporated, along with potted plants, to bring an even more distinctive touch of nature inside.

Unlike larger, more spacious dwellings, we think that cottages draw us into ourselves and bring our personal worlds much closer to us. We surround ourselves and interact more intimately with our most prized possessions and those treasured objects we have gathered along the way, and there is less space there for our spirits to get lost in.

The cottage style not only reflects a desire for a simpler experience, it also suggests a turning toward a peacefulness and serenity not found in larger, more formal or open settings. This might be why we think our fillable lamps work so well with cottage style, for they can be thought of as our vision of what our own perfect, cozy, and peaceful world would be. Even if we don't actually live in a Carmel cottage, we can replicate the experience on a smaller scale through the scenery in the lamp, much as one would in a child's doll-house, being as creative as we wish to be, knowing all the while that our own creation will be unique and will provide a restful focal point in our home.

The cottage style can take us as far as our creativity will allow us to go, from woodlands, to country lanes, or the seashore. Stone, wood, shell, sand, blossom or greenery can all combine to provide us with a small world within a world that is all our own.

Better joy in a cottage than sorrow in a palace! ~ Proverbs
